Women's Lacrosse Holds Off Thiel on Senior Night

PITTSBURGH - Chatham Women's Lacrosse (8-7, 5-3) picked up a 9-6 win on Senior Night over the Thiel Tomcats (8-6, 4-4) at UPMC Graham Field on Wednesday. Seniors Felicia Hutter, Avery Redd, Kaylynn Savoy and Stephanie Walter were honored before the game. With the win, the Cougars clinched a home game in the first round of the PAC Tournament.

Hutter led the way with five points on three goals and two assists. Graduate student Bailey Donofrio also tallied a hat trick in the win. Junior Sam Beall-Dennell added three points on two goals and an assist. Her two goals put her at 95 career goals, which ties Chatham's career record. Junior Erin Goodwin added a goal with four draw controls. Redd collected nine ground balls and caused four turnovers. In goal, freshman Meghan Cuza-Berry made eight stops.

The Tomcats struck first a minute into the game to take a 1-0 lead, but the Cougars responded with a goal from Hutter to tie the game. After almost eight scoreless minutes and saves from each goalie, Thiel regained the lead and increased that lead to 3-1 under two minutes later. Chatham would bounce back with goals from Goodwin and Hutter just 46 seconds apart to tie the game at three before the end of the first quarter.

A free-position goal gave Thiel another lead, but Chatham broke away for their first lead of the contest with a goal from Hutter and two from Donofrio in a 1:10 span. They would not surrender that lead for the rest of the contest. The Tomcats pulled within one before halftime, but that's as close as they would get.

Beall-Dennell netted the lone goal of the third quarter, while Thiel did not register a shot on goal. In the fourth, Cuza-Berry made three saves, including one on a free-position shot, and Chatham scored twice to secure the win.

Shots were 31-21 in favor of the Cougars. Both teams struggled on free-position attempts, as Thiel was 1-6 and Chatham was 3-9. The Cougars held the advantage on draw controls 11-8.

Chatham Women's Lacrosse will wrap up the regular season on Friday at 7 p.m. when they take on Saint Vincent on the road.
