MUNHALL, Pa. - On Sunday, Softball matched up with the Presidents of Washington & Jefferson College on their home turf. The Cougars enjoyed the beautiful day as they swept the Presidents, winning game one 5-1 and game two 2-1 in nine innings.
In game one, the Cougars scored right away in the first inning. Grad
Kyley Fijalkowski was hit to start the bottom of the first, then advanced to second on a fly out, took third on a wild pitch, and finally was brought home on a sac fly by Junior
Isabelle Griswold. Chatham was able to get two more insurance runs in the fourth when Sophomore
Chelsea Stabile roped a two-run double to left center. The Cougars led 3-0 after four innings of play. The Cougar offense wasn't done though as in the sixth inning, Sophomore
Irene Martin hit an RBI double to left center and the next batter, Grad
Savanna Ahlborn hit an RBI single that scored Martin.
W&J's lone run came in the final inning. The Presidents tallied four hits along with four defensive errors that were costly.
Chatham collected eight hits in game one.
Irene Martin was 2-4 and six different Cougars had a hit.
Cougar starting pitcher Sophomore
Victoria Murren kept the President bats in check. Murren's stat line was: 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 5 BB, 5 SO. The Sophomore creeps closer to 100 strikeouts on the season and just reached the 100 inning mark.
In game two, the Cougars did exactly what they did to start game one, which was score a run in the first inning. This time, Fijalkowski led the inning off with a double to left center. Head Coach Courtney Orr then decided to play small ball as three-hitter Ahlborn laid down a sac bunt and Martin came around to score from second base. W&J starter Kaylee Witner shut the Cougar bats down from the second inning to the ninth, when the Cougars eventually walked it off thanks to an RBI double from
Isabelle Griswold.
Game two was quite the pitcher's dual. There were eight combined hits by both teams. Sophomore
Hannah Chenault got the start for the Cougars and had the best start of her career thus far. Murren returned to the circle in game two, this time in relief. Murren picked up her second win of the day, throwing four hitless innings that helped the Cougars win in walk-off fashion in the ninth inning.
With their first sweep of 2024, Softball moves to 7-19 (3-7) on the season. They will look to build off the sweep as they turnaround for two more PAC contests tomorrow @ Grove City College. Those games are expected to start at 3:30 and 5:30 PM.
