Baseball Defeats La Roche In Close Battle

MUNHALL, Pa. - Baseball had a quick turnaround after their sweep over Saint Vincent yesterday as they matched up against the Redhawks of Laroche University tonight. The Cougars defeated the Redhawks by the score of 5-3.

In the game, the Cougars wasted no time. La Roche starter Jared Hough was dealing with some command issues after a leadoff walk and a hit by pitch. Senior Jake Bredl hit a sac bunt that resulted in a fielding error by the pitcher Hough. Hough was able to work out of the jam though, as he got a pop up and a double play to get them out of the inning after giving up only one run. Chatham got their second run of the game in the third. After two quick outs, the Cougars received a hit by pitch, single by Sophomore Tommy Schubert and a walk by Freshman Brandon Bell. Chatham scored off of two wild pitches in the inning to extend the lead to 3-0. In the next inning, Sophomore Peter Tadic hit a towering pop up to the infield that the Redhawk defenders had trouble with and Senior Jake Bredl was able to come around and score from second base. Chatham received a pinch-hit single by Sophomore Angelo DeLeonardis on a 3-0 pitch in the seventh inning that scored Peter Tadic. La Roche got on the board in the seventh as they cashed in two runs on a double by Ricky Heyz and an RBI groundout by Jamison Rhoades to cut the Chatham lead to 5-2. In the eighth, La Roche got their final run but had second and third and one out. Junior Kole Mayle minimized the inning, after dealing with two errors. Junior Tyler Cote came on in the ninth to get the save and he did so with a clean ninth inning, including a strikeout to end the game.

Freshman Nolan Boehm received his first collegiate start. Boehm threw four stellar innings, gave up one hit, a walk, and collected five strikeouts. The hit Boehm gave up was a leadoff triple, but he managed to get the next three Redhawk batters out to strand the runner at third base.

The Cougars had six hits in the contest. Two of them from Peter Tadic, and one each from Sophomore Caleb Jones, Tommy Schubert, Brandon Bell, and Angelo DeLeonardis.

Senior Dom Costellic tallied his first win of the season on the mound.

Chatham moves to 10-13 (2-5) on the season. They will get back to PAC play on Saturday as they will host the Allegheny Gators. The games are at 2 & 5 PM at West Field in Munhall, PA.
