MUNHALL, Pa. - On Saturday afternoon, the Cougars hosted the third place Allegheny College Gators. The Gators snapped Chatham's three game winning streak, defeating them 5-3 in game one and 13-4 in game two.
In game one, the Gators wasted no time getting in the scoring column. Tyson Bryant-Dawson led off the game with a walk, later stole second, advanced to third on an error, and finally scored on a single by shortstop JD Robinson. Allegheny managed to get two more runs in the third after a fielder's choice and an RBI double by Will Wolff. The Gators pushed one across in the fifth and seventh inning, as they led Chatham 5-0 after seven innings.Â
The story of game one was Gators' starting pitcher Brent Herrmann. Herrmann improved to 4-1 after throwing eight strong innings and holding the Cougar bats to six hits. The southpaw went out to start the ninth with a shutout on the line and at 115 pitches, but was unable to finish the game after giving up back to back hits to start the last inning.Â
To lead off the bottom of the ninth, Sophomore
Peter Tadic, hit a single down the left field line. Sophomore
Tommy Schubert was the next batter and he ripped a single of his own to right field. The Cougars had first and third and no outs when pinch hitter Sophomore
Jason Boller's fielder's choice brought home Tadic to get the Cougars on the board. Chatham received two sacrifice fly's in the inning: one from Freshman
Eli Kelley and the other from Sophomore
Angelo DeLeonardis.Â
Junior
Drew Schreck received the start for Chatham. Schreck lasted five innings, allowed only three hits, gave up four runs (three earned), four walks, and five strikeouts. Junior
David McSorley threw 2.2 scoreless innings in relief.
Tommy Schubert was 2-3 and four other Cougars tallied a hit in game one.Â
In game two, the Cougars gave the ball to Freshman
Nolan Boehm, who was coming off of his best outing of the season which was four scoreless innings vs La Roche. After giving up a leadoff single to Bryant-Dawson, Boehm was able to retire the next three Gator hitters unscathed. In the second, the Gators had a better answer vs Boehm. They were able to push five runs across and get Boehm out of the game as Head Coach
Nic Rush went to the bullpen in favor of Junior
Dawson Morrow after just 1.1 innings of play. Allegheny scored three more in the third, one in the fourth, two in the sixth, and one in the seventh and ninth innings.
The Cougars four runs came in the fifth inning.
Eli Kelley doubled to lead off the inning. Two batters later, Senior
Frankie DeLuca drew a walk, making it first and second with one out for the Cougars. DeLeonardis singled to load the bases and
Benny Dottle reached on a fielder's choice that also scored Kelley. Senior
Jake Bredl hit a soft popup right behind pitcher's mound, and was able to leg it out for a hit that brought in another run to make the score 9-2. The final Chatham runs came from the next batter Sophomore
Caleb Jones, who hit a two-run double to right center.
Chatham was outhit by Allegheny 20-9 in game two.
Angelo DeLeonardis was 2-5.
