Baseball Splits with Altoona

DAVENPORT, Fl. - The Cougars had a doubleheader Friday afternoon vs the Penn St Altoona Lions. The teams split as the Cougars won game one 7-4 and the Lions won game two 4-3.

In game one, the Cougars got on the board first in the opening frame. Benny Dottle led off the game with a line drive single off the pitcher and Jake Bredl hit a double to make it second and third with nobody out. Caleb Jones hit a ground ball to second base that brought home Dottle. The Lions scored their four runs between the fourth and fifth inning as they led 4-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth. In that inning, the Cougars answered and scored six total runs that would eventually decide the game. The Cougars received RBI knocks from Benny Dottle, Caleb Jones, Angelo DeLeonardis, and Tyler Cote. Freshman Gianni Cantini came in to pitch the rest of the fourth and the whole fifth inning. The Ringgold alumni threw 1.2 innings allowing a hit and two strikeouts to earn his first collegiate win of his career. Junior Tyler Cote came in to pitch the seventh as he picked up his third save of the season.

Junior Carter Beneigh got the start as he went four innings, gave up 3 hits, one run, four walks, and six strikeouts. Benny Dottle was 3-4 with two runs scored and Caleb Jones was 2-3 with three RBI's.

In game two, Altoona scored two runs in the first and second innings as that was all they needed. The Cougars got on the board in the third thanks to a wild pitch that scored DeLeonardis. Freshman Eli Kelley hit a single to right field to cut the lead in half 4-2. Things went quiet until the top of the seventh when Sophomore Caleb Jones hit his first collegiate homerun to trim the lead to 4-3. The Cougars were unable to score a run after the Jones homerun with two outs.

Senior Dom Costellic threw four scoreless innings in relief, scattered two hits, a walk, and two strikeouts. Senior Jake Bredl was 2-3 with a BB and a run and Caleb Jones was 1-4 with a HR.

Baseball now moves to 4-5 on the season as they will finish up their spring break trip tomorrow at 9 AM against Calvin.
