Women's Lacrosse Takes Season Opener over Calvin

GREENVILLE, Pa. - Chatham Women's Lacrosse (1-0) started the 2024 campaign with a 10-8 win over the Calvin University Knights (1-1) on Friday night at the Rissell-Schreyer Dome on the campus of Thiel College. The Cougars have now started 1-0 for the past four seasons.

Chatham was led offensively by senior Felicia Hutter, who totaled six points on four goals and two assists. Hutter was 2-2 on free-position shots. Graduate student Bailey Donofrio and junior Sam Beall-Dennell each scored two goals, while junior Erin Goodwin netted a goal and provided an assist. First year Izzy Davanti notched her first career score and junior Syba Ismail tallied an assist.

Defensively, senior Avery Redd and junior Josie Barton each collected four ground balls to lead the team, and Redd added a game-high three caused turnovers. Goodwin had five draw controls, two caused turnovers and two ground balls to go along with her two points. In net, freshman Meghan Cuza-Berry made nine saves to earn the win in her collegiate debut.

The Cougars jumped ahead 2-0 on two quick goals from Beall-Dennell at 13:29 and 10:05. Goodwin struck just over a minute later and then assisted Hutter's score with 25 seconds left in the first quarter.

Donofrio netted the first goal of the second quarter at 11:15, with an assist from Hutter, to give Chatham a 5-0 lead. Calvin answered with their first goal of the evening and followed it up with another just over two minutes later to cut the lead to 5-2, but free-position goals from Hutter and Davanti would grow the lead back to five before the halftime break.

The two sides traded two goals each in the first five minutes of the second half, with the Cougar scores coming from Donofrio and Hutter. Another goal from Hutter on a free-position shot gave Chatham its largest lead of the day at 10-4, but Calvin scored the final three goals of the period to make it 10-7 heading into the fourth.

Both defenses locked down in the final frame, with the Knights scoring the only goal at 40 seconds left as the Cougars held on for the win. Cuza-Berry stopped three of four shots in the fourth quarter.

Shots on goal were even at 17 a piece. Calvin won 14 of the 22 draws and were 17-17 on clears, but the Cougars were 4-4 on free-position attempts while the Knights were 3-5.

Women's Lacrosse will return to action on Wednesday at Mount Union.
