PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Chatham Men's Lacrosse (0-1) opened the season with a 12-5 loss to the Oberlin Yeomen (1-0) on Saturday at UPMC Graham Field. The Yeomen held a slim 6-5 advantage after three quarters before pulling away with a 6-0 final period.
The Cougars were led in scoring by freshman
Devin Traister, who netted two goals in his collegiate debut. Traister added seven ground balls and was 7-17 in the faceoff circle. The other three Chatham goals came from sophomore
Trent Griffin, sophomore
Alex Stanuikynas and first year
Tanner Marsh. Junior
Ethan Rinker picked up an assist on Stanuikynas' goal.
The two teams almost played to a scoreless first quarter, with Oberlin recording the first tally 13 minutes into the game. Chatham would answer right back as Griffin's score tied the game just 40 seconds later.
Five minutes into the second quarter, the Yeomen would take a 3-1 lead with two quick markers in a 50-second span. That lead held for just under 10 minutes until Traister scored his first career goal. Oberlin put another one on the board in the final minute of the half, but Traister scored again immediately after winning the ensuing faceoff to make it 4-3 Oberlin going into halftime.
In the third quarter, the Cougars tied it when Marsh capitalized on a man-up opportunity, but the Yeomen again scored twice in rapid succession to regain the two-goal advantage. Stanuikynas buried his shot off the feed from Rinker to make it 6-5 and Chatham had an extra-man opportunity later in the quarter but couldn't convert.
The Cougars committed a penalty early in the final frame, which the Yeomen converted on to go up 7-5, and it was all Oberlin from then on as they found the net five more times to secure the win.
Shots on goal were 30-17 in favor of the Yeomen, and they were 3-4 on extra-man opportunities, compared to the Cougars' 1-7. Chatham was 17-22 on clear attempts and Oberlin was 23-25. The Yeomen also won the faceoff battle 11-9.
Men's Lacrosse will look to bounce back Feb. 28 when they host Marietta.
