Men's Hockey Falls in Season Opener


Pittsburgh, Pa. - On Friday the Cougars opened their season at home against the sixth ranked team in Division III, and new conference opponent, SUNY Geneseo.

In the first period the Knights came out firing putting three shots in the back of the net. After the first period the Cougars were out shot 13-11 and the Knights put more shots on gaol, 9-5. The Cougars were able to win a majority of the faceoffs in the first period, 8-5. The Knights were able to convert on the one Cougar penalty, turning in a power play goal for their third goal of the period.

In the second period neither team could break through as the period ended with an unchanged 3-0 score. The Cougars had a successful penalty kill allowing only one off target shot in the two minutes. Cameron Kuntar had 11 saves in the period to keep the Cougars from falling further behind.

13 seconds into the third period the Cougars would break through and score their first goal of the game, sophomore Andrew Martino found the back of the net assisted by Camden Smith. The Knights would answer back with two more goals, the final being an empty net goal, to make the final score 5-1 in favor of the Knights. Cameron Kuntar ended the game with 24 saves.

The Cougars will play the second game of the weekend series tomorrow against the Knights with a scheduled puck drop of 4 PM.
