PITTSBURGH - Chatham Men's Basketball (1-1) suffered defeat in its home opener with a 88-66 loss against #18 Carnegie Mellon (2-0) on Wednesday at the Athletic and Fitness Center.
Simon Boyer led the Cougars with 22 points on 7-16 with four three-pointers.
Drew Vizenor scored 14 points with four triples of his own, while
Lovenson Xavier had eight points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Donovan Callahan came off the bench to score six points on 3-3 shooting in seven minutes, and
Diaun Pinkett added four points with a team-high nine rebounds.
Blaine Gartley had a full stat sheet with four points, four assists, three rebounds and three steals.
The Cougars opened the game on a 7-2 run with layups from Boyer and Gartley and a three-pointer from Pinkett. The Tartans would swing back with a 9-3 run to take an 11-10 lead at 14:19. Chatham returned with a 9-2 stretch, with five points from
Easton Fulmer and four from Boyer, to jump out to a 19-13 advantage, but Carnegie Mellon dominated the rest of the first half, including an extended 20-6 run that spanned over four minutes, to go into the break with a 45-33 lead.
Chatham began the second half with a quick 6-0 run to pull within six of the Tartans, but would not get closer than five as the teams traded buckets for the next three minutes. A CMU three ball with 12:55 left made it a 10-point game, and the Tartan lead stayed at double-digits for the rest of the way, reaching as many as 26.
Carnegie Mellon held a 43-38 advantage on the boards, and each team committed 11 turnovers. Chatham shot 30.8% (20-65) from the field, while their opponents shot 49.2% (32-65). The Cougars knocked down 10 threes, but went 16-24 from the free-throw line.
Chatham Men's Basketball is back in action Saturday with the conference opener on the road against Thiel at 3 p.m.
