GREENVILLE, Pa. - January 31, 2024 - Chatham Men's Basketball (13-8, 11-5) came away with a 60-59 win over the Thiel Tomcats (7-14, 6-10) on Wednesday at the Beeghly Gymnasium. The Cougars' third straight win came thanks to a free throw from sophomore guard
Diaun Pinkett that gave Chatham the lead with seven seconds remaining.
Pinkett led the game in scoring with 17 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season. He added a team-leading five assists and tallied two steals. Junior guard
Blaine Gartley scored 10 points on 3-6 shooting with three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Senior forward
Luca Robinson notched 10 points of his own and pulled down seven boards.
The Tomcats opened the game on a 7-0 run, but the Cougars immediately answered with their own 12-0 run, with six points each from Pinkett and Robinson. The two teams battled before another 9-0 Chatham swing helped them to a 35-25 lead going into the half. After Gartley opened the second half with a layup, Thiel put together a 10-0 stretch to pull within two points before tying the game just over a minute later. It was a game of runs from there on out, with the biggest being an 8-0 run from the Tomcats to tie the game at 59 with under 30 seconds to play before Pinkett connected from the charity stripe to pull the Cougars across the finish line. Despite tying the game twice and keeping Chatham within single-digits for most of the half, Thiel never regained the lead.
The Cougars shot 35.2% (19-54) from the field and 26.1% (6-23) from beyond the arc, but held the Tomcats to just 32.4% (22-68) from the field and 20% (1-5) from three.
Men's Basketball will hit the road again Saturday to face off against the Westminster Titans. The Cougars bested the Titans 96-83 back in December.
