Men's Volleyball Ends PAC Preview with Back to Back Losses

LATROBE, Pa. - Jan. 20, 2024 - Chatham finished with a 0-2 record on the final day of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Preview. The first match ended in a sweep by Hiram (4-1, 0-0 AMCC), followed by a five-set loss to Geneva (3-2, 0-0 AMCC). 

In match one, the Cougars hit .075 with two of their top three hitters finishing at .150 and .133. Freshman Benjamin Shelestak led the team with 10 kills, followed by freshman Tim McCabe (6) and senior Maximilian Barrett (6). Freshman Alex Moncello (14) and senior Coulter Chaffee (10) combined for 24 assists. Moncello (2), freshman Frank Evan (2) and Barrett (1) served the Cougars five aces in the match. 

Defensively, Chatham totaled 43 digs with freshman Luis Carrasquillo leading the way with 13. Additionally, McCabe and Barrett sent back two Terrier attacks. 

Match two went the full distance versus Geneva, but ended in a 10-15 defeat for the Cougars. Shelestak (14) and McCabe (14) were the team leaders again in kills combining for 28. The two first years also combined for 11 of Chatham's 13 aces in the match. Moncello (24) and Chaffee (17) combined for 41 of 42 team assists. Overall, the Cougars struggled to hit again, netting a .108 attacking percentage. 

On the defensive side, the Purple and Grey allowed a season-high 72 points to Geneva but held them to a low hitting percentage (.199). The men also denied seven attacks, led by freshman Mannix McKaveney's three. Carrasquillo recorded a match-high 18 digs, followed by Shelestak's 13. 

The Cougars end the weekend with a 1-3 overall record, earning their first program win against Bethany. The team will make their home debut on Feb. 1 against Saint Vincent at 7 p.m.
