PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Jan. 19, 2024 - Chatham was defeated by the visiting Stevenson Mustangs (13-4-1, 9-3-1) 3-2 after erasing a 0-2 deficit. The Cougars are now 1-7 at home and sit at
5-10-0 overall and 4-9-0 in conference play.
The first period was scoreless as Chatham led the shot count 10-9. The Cougars had a power play opportunity but managed a single shot to keep the score even.
The Mustangs scored first at the 13:53 mark of the second. Another man-up situation presented itself but Chatham headed into the final period trailing 0-1.
Two and a half minutes into the closing period, Stevenson netted another goal, extending their lead to two. But, before the midpoint of the third, the Cougars lit the lamp twice to tie the game. The first goal was an unassisted score by junior Carson Grainer. Then, at the 7:44 mark, senior Lucas Rothe slapped in the equalizer off assists from sophomore Oscar Saarinen and junior Evan Mitchell. Nearly three minutes later, however, the Mustangs capitalized on a power play to regain the lead. The remaining 10 minutes saw the Cougars lead the shot count 12-11 and earn a final power play. Yet, with an empty Cougar net, the Mustangs held off the Chatham attack to earn the win.
Freshman Louis Finnegan made 35 saves on 38 shots, while sophomore Brendan Pomerantz deflected four shots.
Chatham returns to the ice on Saturday at 3 p.m. for game two of this season series
