Huge Second Half Leads Women's Basketball Over Grove City

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - January 13, 2024 - Chatham Women's Basketball (14-2, 10-1) earned a 76-51 win over the Grove City Wolverines (7-9, 6-5) on Saturday at the Athletics and Fitness Center. The Cougars bounced back from a three-point halftime deficit to outscore the Wolverines 45-17 in the second half.

Sophomore guard Hannah Chenault led the game with 19 points 7-8 shooting including 5-6 from downtown. Sophomore forward Alyssa Laukus was 7-9 from the floor for 16 points and had six rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks. Laukus has blocked multiple shots in four of the last six contests. Junior guard Emily Durkee scored 13 points on 3-6 shooting and was a perfect 4-4 from the free-throw line. Junior forward Samantha Hardy scored six points and pulled down a season-high seven boards.

The two teams traded leads four times in a tight first quarter, which ended with a two-point Grove City lead. The Cougars did not lead at all in the second quarter, but kept the Wolverines close as they never lead by more than six. Durkee banked in a half-court shot at the buzzer to send the Cougars into the locker room down just three. The Cougars regained the lead early in the third quarter and ended it on a 15-2 run to take control of the game. They dominated in the fourth quarter as well, with three triples from Chenault and two from Durkee which contributed to an extended 38-11 run over the final 15 minutes of the game.

Chatham shot 43.8% (28-64) from the field, 33.3% (9-27) from deep and 78.6% (11-14) from the charity stripe. The Cougar defense held Grove City to under 30% from the floor (29.4% / 20-68) and from three (26.3% / 5-19). The Wolverines collected 27 offensive rebounds and won the board battle 49-44.

Women's Basketball will go for its 14th straight win on Wednesday on the road against Geneva. The Cougars beat the Golden Tornadoes 92-77 at the AFC earlier in the season.
