MARIETTA, Ohio - September 1, 2023 - Chatham Men's Soccer started the season with a 3-0 road defeat against the Marietta Pioneers on Friday evening. The Cougars now fall to 0-3-2 all-time in season openers.
The Pioneers dominated the possession throughout, but strong defense from the Cougars kept the game scoreless going into halftime. Chatham had a promising opportunity to take the lead in the 43rd minute, when freshman forward
Azavier Coppin made an impressive run to the edge of the box and fired a nice looking strike, but missed just wide left.Â
Marietta finally struck in the 56th minute and scored again in the 77th minute to take control of the match. The Pioneers put the finishing touches on with a score in the 89th minute.
First-year goalkeeper
Justin Teufel made five saves in his collegiate debut.
The Pioneers won 12 corners, while the Cougars failed to earn one. Marietta also commanded in shots on goal with an 8-3 advantage.
Men's Soccer hits the field again tomorrow in a road matchup with La Roche.
