GROVE CITY, Pa. - May 6, 2023 - Chatham Baseball ended the season with a doubleheader split on the road against the Grove City Wolverines, with a loss in game 1 of 13-3 and a win in game two of 9-5. The Cougars end the season 19-18, which marks the first winning season in program history.
In game one, the Wolverines scored 13 runs over the first four innings. The Cougars got three runs in the seventh inning when graduate students
Nico Cuello and
Caleb Lehman each picked up RBI hits, but Chatham was unable to surpass the 10-run mercy rule.
Lehman was 1-3 with two RBI and Cuello was 2-4 with an RBI and a run.
In game two, the Cougar offense bounced back. Chatham surrendered two runs in the first inning, but responded in the second for four runs when first-year outfielder
Peter Tadic singled to score classmate
Jason Boller and Cuello cleared the bases with a double to drive in three. After the Wolverines tied the game at 4, the Cougars put up another four-run inning in the fourth as Lehman brought in two with a single, sophomore catcher
Tyler Cote drove in Cuello and Boller drew a bases loaded walk. Grove City cut the lead to 8-5 but sophomore first baseman
Quinn Burke brought it back to a four-run cushion with a solo homer in the top of the ninth.
Burke's homer was his fourth of the year, which sets a new Chatham single-season record. The previous record of three was set multiple times, most of which were by senior third baseman
Brandon Griener, who hit three homers in each of the last three seasons.
Cuello and junior infielder
Benny Dottle also set new Cougar single-season records, as Cuello finished the season with a total of 36 RBI, which narrowly edged out teammate
Jake Bredl's 35 as they both shattered the previous record of 26. Dottle finished the season with a batting average of .401.
Dottle was 2-4 in game two with two runs scored. Cuello was 2-5 with three RBI and a run scored.
Sophomore right hander
David McSorley threw 6.0 innings of one-run ball in relief and got the win.
