Baseball Ups Win Streak to Three with Second-Straight Mercy-Rule Win

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - March 20, 2023 - Chatham Baseball earned its third win in a row Monday evening with a 14-2 win over visiting Penn State Altoona. The win makes the Cougars an even 6-6 on the season.

Chatham's offense got busy early, striking for three runs in the bottom of the first. Graduate catcher Caleb Lehman tripled to score graduate outfielder Nico Cuello and junior infielder Benny Dottle. Lehman then came around to score on a passed ball. Chatham scored another three in the third inning with a three-run double from junior outfielder Dylan Vogel.

The Cougar bats stayed red hot in the fourth inning, batting around and putting up a seven spot. Dottle drove in junior utility man Jake Bredl with a double and then was doubled in with Lehman by sophomore designated hitter Tyler Cote. Cote then scored after Vogel drew a bases-loaded walk and Bredl brought in two runs with his second single of the inning. Sophomore infielder Sammy Helton scored Vogel with a single for the Cougars' seventh run of the inning.

A double from senior third baseman Brandon Griener would provide Chatham's final run in the fifth, giving the Cougars enough cushion to eventually win by mercy rule in the seventh.

Sophomore right-hander Drew Schreck was lights out on the mound for Chatham, throwing 6.0 scoreless innings with just one walk and one hit allowed to earn his second win of the year. Sophomore reliever David McSorley shut things down in the seventh for the Cougars.

Vogel went 1-2 at the plate and led the team with four RBI. Lehman, Bredl and Cote each drove in two runs, with Lehman scoring three in addition. 14 runs are the most for the Cougars in a game this season.

Baseball hits the field again tomorrow with a doubleheader on the road at Pitt Greensburg.
