PITTSBURGH, Pa. - February 3, 2023 - Chatham Men's Hockey hosted Arcadia tonight at the Hunt Armory. The visiting Knights would score early and the Cougars would remain scoreless until the third. Chatham would have an incredibly productive third period, resulting in an eventual 4-4 tie and 2-0 shootout victory.
Arcadia would score three minutes into the game before expanding their lead to two with another goal in the final minutes of the second.
Despite an early goal from the visitors, Chatham got into an impressive scoring rhythm which allowed them to not only tie the game, but pull ahead 4-3.
The scoring started with first-year Nick Cyprian on the power-play, with assists going to classmates Oscar Saarinen and Caden Smith.
Not five whole minutes later, sophomore Matt Doyle hit the back of the net after receiving passes from classmate Evan Mitchell and junior Aiden Girduckis.
Doyle would assist on the Cougars' third and tying goal scored by Caden Smith, as would junior Chris Dusek on the power-play.
Chatham's fourth and final regulation goal was supplied by sophomore Heath Drye, who was assisted by Saarinen for his second of the night.
With overtime forced late by the Knights, the Cougars held out for a shootout. The Knights shot first, but were denied by first-year netminder Nick Bernstein, who had entered the game in relief early in the third.
Saarinen would put the Cougars ahead after the first round of the shootout, which was followed by another backstop from Bernstein.
It would be JJ Fecteau to end the long-fought game once and for all with a backhand over the Arcadia goaltender's shoulder, giving the Cougars the best of three that they needed.
With the win, the Cougars now stand at 9-3-3 in conference. They have a chance to add another three points to their record tomorrow night at 7 as they host Arcadia again for their senior night.
