WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - February 28, 2023 - Chatham Softball faced Houghton and Cabrini today at the Diamondplex in Winter Haven in day three of Spring Training.
Game one was dominated by Chatham from the start. First-year Victoria Murren was unstoppable from the start in the circle, striking out three Highlanders in just the first inning. She would end the game with 11 total strikeouts in the shutout, setting a new career-high and earning her first collegiate win.
Senior Alyssa Hoffman had the first RBI of the game, driving in senior Mackenzie Dunn.
Graduate student Kyley Fijalkowski would walk afterward, forcing senior Kaitlyn Collins home.
In the third, Fijalkowski would rope a first-pitch triple, only to be brought home shortly after by Murren at the plate. Keeping the momentum within the third inning, junior Savanna Ahlborn singled to right field to bring home Murren and graduate student Paige Shaftic. Dunn was up next and would bring in two runs with a single before Collins scored Dunn with the same left field single.
Game two against Cabrini ended 8-0 in the Cavaliers' favor. Savanna Ahlborn and Justine Boyle both had a team-high two hits.
In the circle, first-year Cailyn Lucas pitched 4.1 innings and faced 18 batters. Junior Addison Mangieri faced two batters and first-year Chelsea Stabile faced one.
The Cougars are now 1-5 through three days of Spring Training. They are back in action on Thursday at 2 and 4:30 PM against St. Mary's (MN) and Adrian (MI), respectively.
