DAVENPORT, Fla. - February 27, 2023 - Chatham Baseball suffered a doubleheader sweep Monday morning at the hands of the Houghton Highlanders, falling in game one by the score of 5-4 and in game two by a mark of 5-3. The Cougars are now 3-3 to start the 2023 campaign.
Houghton jumped out to early command of game one with two runs in the first and two more in the third. The Cougars fought back with three runs in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs on a wild pitch, a sac fly from sophomore catcher
Tyler Cote and a bases-loaded walk drawn by junior outfielder
Jake Bredl. Chatham then tied up the ballgame the next inning when graduate catcher
Caleb Lehman drove in junior outfielder
Dylan Vogel with a single. The Cougars could not complete the comeback, however, with Houghton's fifth run in the top of the fifth marking the ballgame's last.
Lehman finished the game 2-4 with an RBI. Sophomore southpaw
Kole Mayle struck out two in 2.2 scoreless innings of relief.
In game two, the Highlander offense again wasted no time taking control, with a three spot in the bottom of the first. The next half inning saw sophomore
Sammy Helton bring in graduate outfielder
Nico Cuello with a double to cut the Houghton lead to 3-1, but the Highlanders took the run back in the bottom half of the fourth. Sophomore first baseman
Quinn Burke hit Chatham's first homer of the year in the fifth, a two-run shot to left field, but the Cougar offense couldn't continue rolling.
Burke went 2-3 with a homer and a single.
Baseball will hit the diamond again Thursday morning with a matchup against John Jay College.
