PITTSBURGH, Pa. - December 19, 2023 - Chatham Men's Basketball (7-4, 5-2) suffered its first loss since before Thanksgiving with a 77-62 defeat at Carnegie Mellon (8-2, 0-0) on Tuesday at the Wiegand Gymnasium. The Cougars had their lowest three-point shooting percentage of the season at 19.4% (6-31).
Senior forward
Luca Robinson scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Robinson was 8-17 from the field, including 2-6 from beyond the arc, and was the only Cougar in double-figures. Sophomore guard
Diaun Pinkett was a point away from his fourth double-double of the season as he finished with nine points, 11 rebounds and three assists. Junior forward
Hunter Verling netted seven points with nine rebounds and two steals. Verling hit his first three of the season on his first and only attempt.
It was a tight battle for the majority of the first half, but a 17-8 run for the Tartans in the final six minutes helped them pull away to a double-digit halftime lead. The second half was again a back and forth affair, but the inability to get going from beyond the arc made the comeback effort too much for the Cougars.
Chatham shot 30.8% (24-78) from the floor while Carnegie Mellon shot 46.3% (31-67). The Tartans were not much better from downtown, going 4-16, but they out-rebounded the Cougars 50-44 and had 48 points in the paint.
Men's Basketball will travel to Gambier, Ohio on Thursday as they attempt to bounce back against the Kenyon Owls.
