BETHANY, W.V. - November 29, 2023 - Chatham Women's Basketball (4-2, 3-1) earned a decisive 88-59 win over the Bethany Bison (5-3, 3-1) on Wednesday at the Hummel Field House. The Cougars shot 60.7% (37-61) from the field, which sets a new program record.
Junior
Aurielle Brunner led the team with 18 points on 8-9 shooting, which came thanks to multiple breakaway layups as she tallied nine steals to match her career-high. Brunner now has 17 steals in the last two games and leads the PAC with 32 steals in six games. Sophomore
Hannah Chenault scored 14 points and went 3-5 from deep. Juniors
Charjae Brock and
Zelimar Rodriguez had 12 points and three rebounds each with Brock adding three assists. Junior
Ashlie Louden scored seven points and led the team with seven boards.
The Cougars opened the contest on an 11-3 run, but the Bison battled back to close the gap as Chatham led 21-18 at the end of the quarter. Both offenses were hot in the opening frame with the Cougars going 9-13 from the floor and the Bison 6-10. The second quarter was dominated by Chatham, who again scored 21 points while holding Bethany to just four to go into halftime up 20 points. Chenault, Rodriguez and Brock accounted for 19 of the team's 21 points in the quarter and the Cougars shot 8-14 from the field. Chatham led by as many as 33 in a runaway second half.
In addition to their record-breaking shooting percentage, the Cougars were 8-20 from beyond the arc and 6-11 from the free-throw line. The Chatham defense used the press and forced 23 turnovers. Every player that checked in for the Bison had at least one turnover. Bethany went 6-21 from three-point range.
Women's Basketball will hit the road again Saturday afternoon to face the Franciscan Barons in Ohio.
