WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - January 6, 2023 - Chatham Women's Hockey opened their 2023 campaign with a road game against Wilkes University. The Cougars would come out on top of a 6-3 game to improve their UCHC record to 5-3-1.
Junior Allison Corser-James would open the night's scoring early in the first, skating through the Colonel defense and around the netminder. She was followed shortly after by fifth-year Fiona Danahy, who hammered home a rebound originating from junior Abi Fuzaylov on the power-play.
Wilkes would cut their goal deficit to one, which was quickly rectified by junior Ally Nolan. Classmate Ariel Garbin and first-year Kayla Clark were credited with assists on the play.
In the second period, Corser-James would net her second of the evening, helped along by Nolan. Wilkes would cut Chatham's lead in half yet again before the period was through.
The third period saw two goals from Chatham and just one from Wilkes. Nolan scored yet again thanks to a pass from senior Brooke Almond, and she then found classmate Kaylynn Savoy in front of the net to score the sixth and final goal.
Nolan finished the game with five points on two goals and three assists. Corser-James trailed with two points and a team-high six shots on goal. Nolan and Almond both left the ice with +4 ratings.
In the circle, junior Cameron Carmody notched a game-high 13 face-off wins.
Defensively, first-year goaltender Sam Brophy made 22 saves. In front of her, defensemen Kayla Clark and Samantha Barrett each registered three blocks.
The Cougars will look to complete the sweep of the Colonels tomorrow at 5 PM at the Toyota Sportsplex in Wilkes-Barre.
