PITTSBURGH, Pa. – April 29, 2022 – The Chatham University baseball team were limited to just three hits all game, falling 4-1 to visiting Grove City College Friday evening at West Field. The Cougars' record drops to 11-20 overall and 3-17 in PAC play.
Chatham's four runs surrendered came in four separate innings. The Wolverines wasted little time getting ahead, leading off with a double and then an RBI single in the first two batters. Grove City's second run came in the third on an RBI double, and the third run was a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Chatham was held to just one hit through six innings, going 1-2-3 in five of the first six innings. That hit came off the bat of first-year
Quinn Burke. The Cougars broke through in the bottom of the seventh after senior
Nico Cuello singled to lead off the frame. He stole second on a strikeout, advanced to third on an error by the pitcher, and then scored following an error by the Wolverine shortstop away from the play.
Grove City quickly got that run back after putting the first three batters of the top of the eighth aboard. The Wolverines scored one on an RBI double that turned into the third out after attempting to stretch that into a three-bagger. The Cougars' final base hit was in the bottom of the eighth on a pinch hit single by first-year
Brady Wingeart.
Starting the game and taking the defeat on the hill was first-year
Tyler Cote after going four innings, giving up the first two runs. Classmate
Kole Mayle relieved him and also went four innings, retiring four Wolverines on strikes. The final inning was completed by fellow first-year
David McSorley, who retired three straight batters.
The Cougars head to Grove City tomorrow for a double header beginning at 2:00.
