GROVE CITY, Pa. – April 30, 2022 – The Chatham University baseball team ended up splitting its road twin bill at Grove City, claiming game one 3-2 and falling in game two 8-1. Chatham's record dips to 12-21 overall and 4-18 in PAC play.
The first inning was unorthodox but produced the Cougars' first run of the contest, with senior
Nico Cuello getting hit by a pitch and classmate
Caleb Lehman walking. Then an error by the Wolverine first baseman allowed the former of the two to score.
The Wolverines tied the game in the second, but the Cougars got the two runs they needed on one swing shortly after, coming off the bat of junior
Brandon Griener. The Brentwood native drove in Cuello and Lehman to put Chatham up 3-1. Grove City got one back in the bottom of the fifth and threatened in the seventh, but the Cougar pitching denied any such chance and sealed the win.
Chatham narrowly outhit Grove City 5-4 and were aided by two Wolverine errors. Griener was 2/4 while the other base hits were by Cuello, Lehman, and first-year
Sam Helton. Junior
Eric Paulin got the win in 4.1 innings of work, striking out three. First-year
Drew Schreck punched out two Wolverines after working through 1.2 innings, and senior
Ryan Denz got the save.
The Cougars were not as fortunate in the second game, falling behind 8-0 in the sixth. The only RBI came from Lehman on a single. Lehman, first-year
Brady Wingeart, and sophomore
Dylan Vogel each had a pair of knocks, while Cuello, Helton, and first-years
Quinn Burke and
Tyler Cote each contributed hits.
Senior
Mason Akers started and took the L after working two innings. Junior
JJ Shibest went the following inning while sophomore
Mitchell Thornton was the primary pitcher for the Cougars, working three innings. First-year
David McSorley and senior
Kelli Jenkins wrapped up the final two innings.
Chatham hits the road for another afternoon double header on Tuesday, May 3 at Franciscan starting at 1:00.
