PITTSBURGH, Pa. - April 21, 2022 - Chatham Softball hosted Geneva College tonight in a conference double header. The Cougars would take the first game by a score of 10-8 before the Golden Tornadoes stole game two 13-8.
Geneva would go up 4-0 in the second, but Chatham would get right to work. A sacrifice fly from graduate student Paige Shaftic would score junior Justine Boyle before a three-run homer was cracked by graduate student Lauren McNany. To round out the inning, junior Lauren Haak would hit an outfield single to score sophomore Mackenzie Dunn, putting the Cougars up by one.
Chatham would not score again until the fifth inning on, but did so in high quantities. First-year Isabelle Griswold would hit a hard ground ball to center field, scoring Haak. Shaftic would follow, scoring Junior Alyssa Hoffman and first-year pinch runner Olivia Coarr. Shaftic's slap would tie the game at eight.
The sixth inning sealed the Golden Tornadoes fate when junior Kaitlyn Collins drove in Lauren McNany. For good measure, Boyle would send Mackenzie Dunn home for the home team's tenth and final run.
Game two started in similar fashion, with Geneva getting up early. However, in the bottom of the first, Kaitlyn Collins, Lauren Haak, and Isabelle Griswold would claim responsibility for Chatham's four runs. The game would remain 4-2 in the Cougars' favor until the fourth inning.
Geneva would score five straight runs before Mackenzie Dunn broke up their offense with a triple of her own, scoring the lead-off Shaftic. Collins would follow with a deep left field double to get Dunn home.
Pitcher Emily Nay would lay down a grounder in the sixth, scoring centerfielder Savanna Ahlborn for her first RBI of the year.
Late in the seventh, Justine Boyle would earn a two-base knock to score Lauren Haak, but the Cougar scoring would unfortunately stop there.
Shaftic, McNany, and Collins would tie for a team-high three RBIs on the day, with McNany accruing four hits.
On the mound for the Cougars, Emily Nay, Mackenzie Dunn, and sophomore Addison Mangieri combined for six strikeouts.
The Cougars are back in action at West Field on Saturday, April 23rd at 10 AM for another conference double-header against Franciscan University.
