Softball Battles to Conference Sweep Over Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa. - April 15, 2022 - Chatham Softball traveled to Thiel College this afternoon for a conference double header. The Cougars would battle to two close games with the Tomcats, taking the first game 6-5 and the second 4-3.

The Cougars got their offense started in the top of the first, beginning with a single from graduate student Lauren McNany. Four-spot hitter Kaitlyn Collins would drive her home with a left-line single for the first run of the game.

The Tomcats would pull ahead in the fourth and maintain a three-run lead until an explosive sixth inning from the visiting Cougars. Sophomore Mackenzie Dunn would start the rally with a triple. Collins would be walked in the next at-bat and an outfield single from junior Justine Boyle would send Dunn home. A few fielding errors by the home team would allow first-year Madison Fisher and graduate student Paige Shaftic to get on and consequently score two runners. A final double from McNany would score Fisher for the sixth and final run.

Thiel would manage just one run in their final offensive outing, leaving the Cougars with a 6-5 conference win.

The Cougars struck first yet again, this time coming from an RBI single hit by junior Danaya Carbajal. Classmate Alyssa Hoffman  would be next up in the book, driving in Lauren Haak with a ground out.

Still up 2-0 in the fourth, Paige Shaftic would extend the lead to three with a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring sophomore Savanna Ahlborn, who pinch ran for first-year Isabelle Griswold after her outfield single.

Thiel would not generate any offense until the fourth, registering just two runs. The score would remain 3-2 until the sixth, when Mackenzie Dunn hit an RBI double to score Hoffman after her own right field single. Thiel would manage just one more run in the bottom of the seventh, unable to catch up to the Cougars for their second straight victory.

With the pair of wins, the Cougars improve to 3-7 in conference. Their next double header is set to take place Thursday, April 21st at West Field.
