Cougar Lead Evaporates In Extras

CLERMONT, Fla. – March 4, 2022 – Chatham held a 9-3 lead through four innings, but that lead dissolved in a 12-11 defeat in nine innings to Rose-Hulman, dropping the Cougars' record to 3-6.

The Cougars struck for five runs in the bottom of the first inning to begin the morning affair. First, sophomore Mackenzie Dunn roped an RBI double to score the first run. Then a fielder's choice allowed Dunn to come around and score. Graduate Lauren McNany singled to drive in the third run and junior Danaya Carbajal brought in two on a bases clearing double to go up 5-0 after one.

Rose-Hulman had a trio of runs as a response in the fouth inning, but the Cougars ballooned their lead to 9-3 after a four-run bottom half. Dunn got her second RBI on a single, junior Isabella Siren drove in two on a single to go up 8-3, then junior Justine Boyle's sacrifice fly made the lead 9-3 in favor of Chatham.

The Engineers got closer in the fifth, closing to gap to one in the fifth. However, an error committed by the Rose-Hulman pitcher allowed the 10th run to score in the bottom of the fifth, giving the Cougars a 10-8 cushion. That lead would not last as the Engineers built a two-run sixth to tie the game at 10. Neither team could score in the seventh thus bringing the game to extras.

In the eighth, Rose-Hulman got the first run to go up 11-10 on an RBI single. Then Dunn provided the SAC fly to tie the game at 11 apiece in the bottom half of the frame. The Engineers tacked on an additional run in the ninth, but this time the Cougars could not respond.

Chatham got a baker's dozen hits but were undone by three errors and 17 knocks by the opposition. Senior Emily Nay started and went 5.0 innings and struck out a trio of batters. Dunn finished the game and took the loss in 4.0 innings.

Chatham looks to capture one more win prior to heading back north with a game against New England later today.
