PITTSBURGH, Pa. - March 19, 2022 - Chatham Softball hosted Houghton College this afternoon in a non-conference double header. Despite taking the first game with a 3-0 win, the Cougars would fall in game two by a final score of 7-5 in favor of the Highlanders.
The Cougars played smart and aggressive ball starting in the first inning, capitalizing on Houghton's errors and taking a 2-0 lead early. Those runs were scored by sophomore Mackenzie Dunn and junior Lauren Haak.
Chatham's third and final run of the game would come in the bottom of the fifth in the form of a sacrifice fly from Dunn, scoring classmate Lindsay Hans who had gotten on with an outfield single before stealing second and advancing to third on a bunt from graduate student Paige Shaftic.
In the meantime, Dunn limited the Highlander offense to just five hits, notching a crucial strikeout on a change-up early on.
In game two, the Cougars would go up first thanks to a Lauren McNany RBI; but a dominant third inning would prove to be too much for the Cougars to top. Six runs would score in favor of the visitors. In the bottom of the third, the Cougars would come back with the bats for an additional four runs, seeing RBIs from Haak, McNany, junior Alyssa Hoffman, and first-year Isabelle Griswold. Griswold and McNany would both get on from right- and left-field line triples respectively.
Senior pitcher Emily Nay would tally three strikeouts in the loss, leaving her 3-3 on the year thus far.
The Cougars do not have game action for another week, when they will travel to Oberlin, Ohio for a double header against the Yeowomen at 1 and 3 PM.
