PITTSBURGH, Pa. – February 19, 2022 – The Chatham University men's lacrosse team lifted the lid on the 2022 season but fell to the visiting Oberlin Yeomen 10-7 on Saturday afternoon at a chilly UPMC Graham Field.
It wasn't the start that the Cougars were looking for as Oberlin came out, caused a turnover, and went in for the first goal of the season just 19 seconds in. Both teams traded goals throughout the first and beginning of the second period, with Cougar goals by sophomore
Isaac Joshi and first-year
Rei O'Brien.
Oberlin went on to score the next three goals to take a 5-2 lead late in the half, but another first-year in
Ethan Rinker scored with just 23 seconds remaining in the second quarter put the halftime score at 5-3 in favor of the Yeomen.
The third period was very defensive, with both teams scoring just once and the Cougar tally by senior
Kyle Rullan. In the fourth, both teams combined for seven goals, four by the visitors as they built their lead to 10-7 to finish the game. Chatham got goals from graduate
Patrick Brunner, senior
Nicholas Guaglione and its only man-up goal of the day from O'Brien.
Chatham was outshot 43-37 for the game but both teams were even with 29 shots on goal apiece, including 11 Cougar shots on goal in the fourth period. The Cougars were 20-26 on clears and gathered in 35 ground balls.
Brunner led all Chatham players with three points thanks to two helpers. Rullan and O'Brien also chipped in two points apiece with the former having an assist. Senior
Shane Gaglione stopped 19 shots.
The Cougars return home on Wednesday, February 23 against Marietta for a 7:00 start.
