PITTSBURGH, Pa. – February 23, 2022 – The Chatham University men's lacrosse team scored eight unanswered goals, including all six tallies in the second period as it defeated Marietta at home 15-9. It marks Chatham's first win of the 2022 season.
Chatham got on the board early, 44 seconds into the game be exact, when first-year
Ethan Rinker scored the opening score. Marietta went on to score the next three goals, but that was when the Cougars went on a hot streak and scored the next eight.
Within that span, senior
Kyle Rullan was a menace scoring-wise. He had four goals, including a pair that were scored with a man-up advantage. Chatham held a 9-3 lead at the break.
Despite never trailing, Chatham could not put away the Pioneers for good. Marietta made things interesting late after cutting the deficit to four on three separate occasions, but Chatham was able to pull away late and secure the six-goal win.
The Cougars outshot Marietta 43-37 for the game and 29-24 on goal. They also scooped up 37 ground balls and caused eight turnovers. Senior
Shane Gaglione played 57:34 and made 15 saves, while first-year
Zen Smith finished the final 2:26.
Rullan led all players with six points, including four goals and two assists. Graduate
Patrick Brunner also had a hot stick with a quartet of goals to his own credit. First-year
Justin Cook and senior
Adam Bleess each scored two goals apiece, senior
Nicholas Guaglione added a goal and an assist while Rinker and graduate
Dillon Dugan scored once. First-years
Rei O'Brien and
Luke Witherell also scooped up one assist each.
The Cougars hit the road next Wednesday, March 2 with a game at Bridgewater beginning at 1:00.
