PITTSBURGH, Pa. – February 11, 2022 – The Chatham men's hockey team faced a 2-0 deficit early in the third period, but an onslaught of Cougar offense led to a come-from-behind 5-2 victory over Arcadia. The win improves Chatham's record to 7-10-2 overall and 5-6-2 in UCHC play. The seven overall wins breaks the previous record set in 2018-19, and the five third period goals are the most in a single period in Chatham history.
The first period saw a slow start for the Cougars, allowing a goal just 2:46 into the game. Arcadia held a 1-0 lead for most of the game, including the entirety of the second period which saw several Cougar chances snuffed out by the Knight defense.
In the third period, Chatham had a man-up advantage to start. Things began to look bleak for the hosts when they allowed a shorthanded goal to Arcadia, putting the visitors up 2-0. However, this just awakened the sleeping giant that was the Chatham offense. Just 26 seconds later, Chatham scored on its only successful power play chance to cut the deficit in half, the first of two goals for first-year
Evan Mitchell, assists to classmate
Zack Conner and senior
Michael Lamison.
The Cougar offense just got its wheels rolling as the period went along. Chatham scored at a four-minute pace throughout the rest of the period. The tying goal came off the stick of junior
Matt Mood after getting the feed from juniors
Tristan Hillebert and
Aidan Girduckis. Mood also gave Chatham its first lead of the night just a little over halfway into the third, getting a pass from neutral ice by junior
Ben Lamm.
The insurance goals would come later in the period, firstly by sophomore
Carson Grainer after getting an assist by Conner. The final tally was in the waning seconds after Arcadia tried to add an extra attacker to its offense, pulling the goalie and allowing Mitchell to score his second of the night.
Chatham steadily outshot Arcadia 43-27 for the game, which gradually increased throughout the game thanks to a persistent attack. Mitchell took six shots to lead the way for the Cougars. Senior
Ricardo Gonzalez had 25 saves in net.
The Cougars will host senior night and their final home regular season game of the season tomorrow against Lebanon Valley with a 4:00 puck drop at the Frozen Pond Arena.
