PITTSBURGH, Pa. - January 24, 2022 - Chatham Women's Basketball hosted Waynesburg this evening in a PAC matchup. Despite the Yellow Jackets getting off to a six point lead, the Cougars battled back to defeat them 66-54.
First-year Aurielle Brunner would get the Cougar offense started with six straight points until graduate student Julianna Skowron hit a jumper to give Chatham the 8-6 lead. First-year Emily Durkee and senior Aliyah Labriola would add a few good shots of their own before the quarter ran out.
Junior Riley D'Angelo would come out in the second with a three, followed by classmate Sierra McClain with the same move to give the Cougars back the lead. Skowron, Brunner, and D'Angelo continued their offensive dominance, aided by several points from graduate student Brittani Smith.
At the half, the Cougars led 30-27. Graduate student Maddy Grennes scored first for the home team in the third quarter, but the Jackets would battle back with some offense of their own. With notable efforts from Smith and Durkee, the Cougars would tie the game in the final seconds at 43.
Durkee, Labriola, and Skowron would give the Cougars a considerable lead out of the gate, supplemented by points from Brunner and McClain. While Waynesburg attempted a comeback, they fell 12 points short.
Skowron and Durkee led the charge, combining for 24 points. Brunner, Smith, and Labriola would combine for an additional 29. Durkee also led the game in assists with four.
Defensively, Julianna Skowron had a game-high three blocks and Brittani Smith, Sierra McClain, and Aurielle Brunner each had four steals.
The Cougars improve to 10-4 overall and 4-3 in conference. They hope to gain another win on Wednesday, January 26th at Thiel.
