Men’s Hockey’s Debut at Hunt Armory Results in Win

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – January 14, 2021 – The Chatham men's hockey team played its first game inside the newly christened Hunt Armory Ice Rink, defeating the King's Monarchs 4-1 on Friday night. The Cougars' record improves to 5-6-2 overall and 4-2-2 in UCHC play after the win.

It wasn't the start that the Cougars were looking for as a stalemate was broken with a Monarch goal with 4:22 remaining in the first period. As the Cougars progressively got more aggressive throughout the game, the score remained 1-0 King's after one.

That persistence paid off in the second period as Chatham cashed in on a power play early. After a shot was saved by King's, sophomore JJ Fecteau and senior Tristan Simm combined for a double assist to first-year Zack Conner, who zigged and zagged his way for the tying goal. The second score was after a faceoff win by junior Matt Mood found sophomore Jackson Koblick, who quickly passed to first-year Matthew Doyle at the point for his first career goal. The score read 2-1 after two.

The story remained nearly identical in the third period. This time as a 5-on-3 power play was ticking down, first-year Evan Mitchell passed to Mood who banged the puck off the pipe for the insurance goal. The final score came shortly after when Mitchell passed to sophomore Carson Grainer, putting the nail in the coffin of Chatham's Hunt Armory debut.

The Cougars held advantages in all categories apart from blocks and penalties. They outshot King's 36-31 and held a 36-27 advantage in faceoff wins. The Cougars also went 2-4 on the power play and were perfect on all five penalty kills. Senior Ricardo Gonzalez made 30 saves in a winning effort.

The Cougars hit the ice in less than 24 hours at the Frozen Pond Arena, taking on No. 7 Wilkes with a 4:00 puck drop.
