Cougars Capitalize in Game One, Split With Wolverines

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – May 1, 2021 – The Chatham University baseball team split Saturday's double header with second-placed Grove City, winning game one 5-1 and dropping game two late 8-7. Chatham's record is now 9-21 with an 8-15 PAC mark.

Game one started swimmingly for the hosts, as senior Ryan Shawley roped a two-RBI single to right field to open the scoring. He later advanced to second on the throw. Chatham added one more in the third after a SAC fly by classmate Jonathan Scarsella.

Grove City managed to cut the deficit from three to two in the top of the third and the game was played at a 3-1 tilt for most of the middle portions of the contest. By the time the first of the twin bill reached the sixth inning, senior Andrew Clark singled to left which drove in two insurance runs, making the score 5-1.

Chatham narrowly outhit Grove City 7-6 but the Cougars capitalized on some key Wolverine gaffes. Both teams had two errors, but Grove City's two led to runs coming home. Junior Nico Cuello smacked the only extra base hit of game two, which was a double. Shawley and Clark each had two hits and two RBI's. Senior Austin Andonisio went coast to coast in a complete game win, allowing six hits and just one run with three punchouts.

Game two appeared to be more of the same with Chatham getting out to an early 1-0 lead after a Caleb Lehman double. A bases loaded walk scored the first of three runs in the third inning, with the second coming courtesy of a Luke Paulson RBI single and the third being a ground out RBI by first-year Justin Marshall.

Grove City bounced back and eventually took the lead in the fifth, a tenuous 5-4 advantage after getting two across in the fourth, three in the fifth. Lehman knocked in his second run of the game with an RBI single to tie the game at 5-5.

In the eighth inning, Chatham took the lead and appeared to have the insurance run for good measure. Scarsella singled and senior Logan Kasper doubled to make the score 7-5. However, the Wolverines got an RBI double and a two-RBI single in the top of the ninth to make the score 8-7.

Chatham was out hit 10-7 in game two despite two-hit performances by Scarsella and Lehman, the former of which scoring twice. Kasper and Lehman each had a double.

First-year Dominic Costellic started and went 4.0 innings after striking out a pair. His reliever, junior Erik Napolitano, took the loss after going 5.0 innings and allowing five runs.

Chatham's final regular season stretch starts on Friday, May 7 with a road doubleheader at Westminster. First pitch of the first game is set for 1:00 p.m.
