STEUBENVILLE, Ohio - April 30, 2021 - Chatham Softball traveled to Steubenville this afternoon for a PAC doubleheader against Franciscan. The Cougars defeated the Barons handily in both games, 3-0 and 10-4, giving them two crucial conference wins in their second-to-last regular season series.
Game one was played to a draw throughout three innings, with the eventual lead going to Chatham in the fourth. Mackenzie Dunn got on thanks to a left-side single and scored with follow-up batter Lauren Haak's double.
The Cougars continued their scoring in the fifth inning when Dunn doubled, scoring senior Caitlin Worwood who was awarded first after being hit by a pitch.
Chatham's final run of game one would come in the seventh. Leadoff batter Paige Shaftic singled to get on base before scoring thanks to an infield knock by Dunn.
Sophomore pitcher Emily Nay was awarded the win, not allowing any hits.
Game two got off to a fast start in favor of the Cougars. Graduate Lauren McNany put out a sacrifice fly to bring in Shaftic for Chatham's first run, followed quickly by an error on the Barons' catcher that allowed Dunn to score. Senior Julie Swedberg had a two-RBI single to round out the inning.
Chatham would not score again until the fourth inning when first-year Mackenzie Dunn hit a three-run home run to right field, scoring classmate Lindsay Hans and sophomore Alyssa Hoffman.
Franciscan would go on a short comeback run, but only accumulate four runs. Chatham more than doubled their runs in the fifth to finish out the game, thanks to RBIs by Hans and Dunn.
Mackenzie Dunn led the Cougars with five hits and seven RBIs on the day.
The pitching trio of Nay, Swedberg, and graduate Kayla Gee allowed just nine hits across both games with Gee logging four strikeouts.
The Cougars look for another series sweep tomorrow, May 1st, as they head to Westminster for their final matchup of the regular season beginning at 1 PM.
