PITTSBURGH, Pa. – April 3, 2020 – The Chatham baseball team hosted and was swept by Bethany College on a chilly Easter Eve at West Field, dropping both games 9-3 and 6-1. The losses dip Chatham's record to 3-9 on the year, 2-7 in PAC play.
Chatham started off hot in the first inning, immediately bringing home two runs on a pair of RBI singles by junior
Caleb Lehman and senior
Andrew Clark. Bethany would counter with two runs in the top of the second and an additional run in the fourth before sophomore
Brandon Griener scored on an error.
Unfortunately, this was the last time Chatham could bring home any runs in the first game. Bethany added six runs, all in the final three innings and four in the eighth, to put away the Cougars for good 9-3.
Despite falling by six runs, Chatham generated nine hits, spearheaded by Lehman and first-year
Frankie DeLuca. The duo went 3/4 with the former scoring a run and adding a double. First-year
Dominic Costellic took the loss in a 6.0 inning effort, striking out four and walking two.
Game two started similarly to game one for the Cougars. After DeLuca led off the game with a single, he came around to score on a wild pitch to give Chatham the early 1-0 lead.
However, much like the first game, Bethany countered. The Bison brought home four in the third, including three on a bases clearing triple. Bethany added two more in the fifth to put the final score at 6-1.
The defeat came in spite of Chatham outhitting the Bison 7-1 and the visitors committing three errors in the field. Leading the way offensively was senior
Logan Kasper, going 2/3 at the plate with a triple. First-year
Dylan Vogel also tallied an extra base hit, which was a double.
Three pitchers toed the rubber for the Cougars. Junior
Trevor Salvior started and took the loss after going 2.1 innings and allowing four runs, all earned. Sophomore
Cole Couchman went 2.2 innings, and first-year
Mitchell Thornton finished the final two innings.
Chatham looks to bounce back next weekend with a series against Geneva. The first double header takes place in Beaver Falls on Friday, April 9 at 1 p.m.
