Baseball Steals Second Game at Bethany

BETHANY, W.Va. – April 2, 2020 – The Chatham University baseball team split its Friday road series with Bethany College in a pair of tightly contested games, losing game one 3-2 and taking game two 5-3. Chatham's record moves to 3-7 on the season and 2-6 in conference play.

In game one, Chatham drew first blood with an RBI single in the second inning by sophomore Luke Paulson which brought home first-year Justin Marshall. Chatham added another run in the fourth thanks to the bat of first-year Corey Miller, which brought home classmate Frankie DeLuca for the 2-0 lead.

After this fourth inning, however, the Cougar bats went silent. Bethany added two runs in the bottom of the fourth with a SAC fly and a double. After senior Jonathan Scarsella was left stranded at second base in the seventh, Bethany walked it off in the bottom of the frame.

Chatham and Bethany were nearly even for the first half of the twin bill, with Chatham connecting on seven base hits and Bethany one-upping the Cougars with eight. Marshall had the most productive batting performance in game one, going 3/4. Miller also had two hits. Senior Ryan Shawley pitched the whole game for Chatham but took the loss after 6.1 innings and striking out six.

In game two, Chatham once again struck first after sophomore Brandon Griener clobbered a leadoff home run in the third. Bethany added a run in the fifth, but the Cougars struck for two more in the sixth. Marshall reached on an error which scored junior Caleb Lehman. Marshall then came around to score on a passed ball.

Bethany would once again tie the game after six innings, but Chatham scored what turned out to be the game winning run by senior Logan Kasper on an error by the catcher trying to throw out a stealing Cougar. Scarsella added the icing on the cake with a ninth inning single that brought home Miller.

Chatham won 5-3 in spite of getting outhit 10-6. The Cougars were aided by three costly Bison errors. Senior Andrew Clark also added a double to his game two line, while junior Caleb Lehman went 2/3 with a walk. Senior Austin Andonisio started and got the win on the bump, going 7.0 innings with one earned run allowed and another half dozen strikeouts. Junior Erik Napolitano closed the final 2.0 innings.

Chatham and Bethany continue their Easter series with a pair of home games at West Field Saturday, April 3. First pitch of game one is set for 2 p.m.
