Bats Grow Cold at Unbeaten W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. – April 17, 2021 – The Chatham baseball team mustered just seven hits between both games at W&J as the Cougars were swept by undefeated No. 10 Washington & Jefferson 8-0 and 7-0. The Cougars' record falls to 6-14 overall and 5-11 in PAC play.

The first game saw damage done in two innings: the second and the sixth. In both innings, the Presidents put up four runs each in route to the 8-0 win.

Chatham had four base hits in game one, all recorded by sophomore Luke Paulson, juniors Caleb Lehman and Nico Cuello and senior Andrew Clark. Taking the loss on the bump was senior Ryan Shawley after going 5.2 innings and allowing all eight runs, four earned. He also struck out a pair of Presidents. First-year Mitchell Thornton got the final out in the sixth.

Chatham rolled with the punches in game two, keeping the game scoreless after four. The Presidents got one back in the fifth and broke the game open in the sixth with a double, single and three-run home run in succession.

Graduate Justin Silvious, junior Mason Akers and Lehman all had one base hit while Cuello was walked once. Akers smacked the lone extra base hit of the double header for Chatham, a double. Senior Austin Andonisio went six innings and took the loss despite fanning five W&J batters. Sophomore Eric Paulin finished the final two innings.

The Cougars and the Presidents duke it out again tomorrow at West Field in another double header. Game one begins at 1:00.
