PITTSBURGH, Pa. - March 9, 2021 - Chatham Softball completed their third split of the 2021 season this afternoon against Saint Vincent College. Game one ended 9-3 in Chatham's favor with a 7-5 bounce back for the Bearcats in game two.
Saint Vincent made the most of their first inning, getting two quick runs over the Cougars. Chatham did not let the lead last, as senior Caiti Worwood tripled as the lead-off batter. She was brought home off of a single from first-year Mackenzie Dunn, who was home with Lauren Haak's double. Haak advanced off of a ground ball from senior Kelsey Benjamin, and was able to get home off of an error.
Haak was back at it in the third inning, bringing Dunn home yet again off of a left field single. Sophomore Carly Clark picked up where the Cougars left off in the bottom of the fourth, bringing in Alyssa Hoffman for run number five of the afternoon.
The Cougars put the finishing touches on the win in the fifth and sixth innings with hits from Haak, Benjamin, Hoffman, and first-year Justine Boyle.
Senior Julie Swedberg earned her second win in the circle, striking out three Bearcats.
Game two saw a comeback from the Cougars after a two-run deficit early on. The Cougars were hitless through four innings until graduate student Paige Shaftic started a two-out rally with a single. First-year Lindsay Hans doubled, driving in an RBI, followed by two more RBIs thanks to a right-center single from Worwood.
Chatham built off of their offensive spark going into the sixth inning, starting with a base hit from graduate student Lauren McNany. Dunn tripled to left center, bringing home her fourth RBI on the day. Shaftic again came up big, scoring Dunn and taking two bases off of a perfectly laid bunt.
Unfortunately, Chatham's five-run rally was not enough to catch the Bearcats, and the Cougars ultimately split.
Kayla Gee came in hot with four strikeouts, taking the reigns from sophomore Emily Nay.
Lauren Haak once again led the Cougars in hits with four, followed by Kelsey Benjamin, Caiti Worwood, and Mackenzie Dunn with three apiece.
The Cougars begin a run of road games starting Saturday, March 13th at Washington & Jefferson College. They return to West Field on March 24th when they host Franciscan.
