Softball Shuts Out W&J to Secure Split

WASHINGTON, Pa. - March 13, 2021 - Softball resumed play this afternoon with a non-conference double header at Washington and Jefferson College. After losing the first game by two runs, Chatham came back in dominant fashion to take down the Presidents 6-0.

Game one began with a Cougar RBI from sophomore Lauren Haak, but the Presidents scored the equalizing and game-winning runs in their first inning at bat. One more President's run in the third would prove unnecessary, as the Cougars were unable to produce any more offense.

Game two started again with Cougar offense, which was more than enough to tame the Presidents.

Senior Caiti Worwood, first-year Mackenzie Dunn, and sophomore Lauren Haak had consecutive singles, loading up the bases for senior Kelsey Benjamin. Benjamin drove a pitch into left field, scoring Worwood and Dunn in the process.

Chatham would be shut down until the fifth inning when pinch hitter Addison Mangeri and Worwood got on with singles. Dunn doubled in the next at-bat, scoring Lindsay Hans and Paige Shaftic, who had been hit by a pitch. With Worwood on third, Lauren Haak hit a fly ball to center, allowing Worwood home for Chatham's fifth run.

With their momentum, the Cougars brought in one more run in the sixth after a pair of walks and an infield error.

Graduate student Kayla Gee earned the shutout victory, throwing twelve strikeouts and allowing only two hits.

Worwood, Haak, and Dunn led the day in hits with three each, combining for four RBIs.

The Cougars have now finished with their fourth split of the season, but look to pick up two more wins at Thiel on Thursday, March 18 at 3 and 5 PM.
