GREENVILLE, Pa. – March 8, 2021 – The Chatham women's basketball team turned in its best defensive performance of the season in the Cougars' 60-37 runaway victory over Thiel Monday night. The win wraps up Chatham's regular season at 4-4.
Chatham set the tone right away, limiting Thiel to just two first-quarter points. After the Tomcats scored the first bucket of the game, Chatham went on a 19-2 run that extended into the second quarter and led 17-2 after one. Thiel made the game much more competitive in the second quarter, but Chatham still held a comfortable 32-14 lead at the break.
The third and fourth quarters were, once again, more even despite Chatham holding leads in both frames. The Cougars were cold from the field in the third quarter at 3-19 shooting (.158), but the strong start was enough to put away Thiel with the 23-point victory.
Chatham did most of its damage through turnovers. The Cougars won the turnover battle 26-16 thanks in part to 18 steals. Junior
Kaitlyn Fertig had four steals and six Cougars had two steals, including the starting five. Chatham turned those turnovers into 17 points.
The majority of Chatham's points came off the bench. The bench outscored Thiel on its own 42-37, with graduate
Maddy Grennes and Fertig scoring 12 and 11 points, respectively. Both had eight rebounds. Sophomore
Taylor Glass was not far off from double digits, finishing with eight points. Sophomore
Sierra McClain and senior
Brittani Smith both had six points to lead the starting five.
The Cougars turn their attention to the PAC playoffs, which begin on Saturday March 13.
