GROVE CITY, Pa. - March 27, 2021 - Chatham Softball traveled to Grove City this afternoon for a non-conference double-header with the Wolverines. The Cougars started the day with a 4-0 win, followed by a close one-run loss in game two.
The Cougars took advantage of their game start at bat, with Lauren Haak singling to left field and moving leadoff Caiti Worwood ahead after being walked. Sophomore Justine Boyle got a shot through to left field once again, scoring Worwood from second.
Chatham remained ahead by one until the sixth inning, when their second run came in thanks to singles by graduate Lauren McNany and sophomore Carly Clark.
To finish out the game, Kelsey Benjamin took advantage of the right-center gap, earning a double and driving in Paige Shaftic and Alyssa Hoffman, both of whom were walked.
In the shutout, graduate pitcher Kayla Gee notched eight strikeouts.
Game two began with a run for Chatham once again, this time scored by Lauren McNany thanks to a left-center double from sophomore Danaya Carbajal.
With two on in the third inning, Justine Boyle delivered once again with a left field single, scoring Hoffman. Grove City answered back with two runs, putting them ahead 3-2.
Chatham would catch up in the fifth, beginning with a double from Lauren Haak. Haak advanced to third thanks to a ball put in play by Kelsey Benjamin, and Justine Boyle shot a sacrifice fly out to center to bring in Haak as the third run.
The score remained tied at three and ultimately stretched the game into ten innings. The Cougars took advantage of lead-off Justine Boyle being walked, as she then stole second and scored on an outfield single by Carly Clark. Unfortunately, Grove City was able to score two more runs, finishing the game with a walk-off single.
The Cougars had 19 hits on the day including a triple and four doubles. Lauren McNany led game two with four hits for a total of six on the day, followed by Lauren Haak with three.
The Cougars return to West Field on Monday, March 29th to host Westminster in their final non-conference matchup of the season. The first pitches are scheduled for 6:30 and 8:30 PM respectively.
