Softball Splits with Bethany in Season-Opening Double Header

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - March 2, 2021 - Chatham Softball returned to the field after almost one full year this afternoon in a double header against Bethany College. Chatham won the first game 5-2, then lost the second in 5 innings by a score of 17-3.

Despite getting down by one run in the bottom of the first inning, Chatham came back strong in the third. First-year Mackenzie Dunn got the Cougars started with her first collegiate RBI, bringing in senior Caitlin Worwood for a tie game. Lindsay Hans soon followed home, putting the Cougars ahead.

Chatham carried their momentum into the fourth inning, starting with singles from Lauren McNany and Alyssa Hoffman. Worwood was walked and the bases were loaded for Hans, who singled. Two runs were scored off of an error on the second baseman, doubling Chatham's runs.

Sophomore Lauren Haak tripled as the lead-off batter in the fifth inning, scoring Chatham's final run on a ground ball hit by sophomore Justine Boyle.

Bethany turned on the offense in the second game, hitting gap shots and long balls early and often. Chatham's runs were scored by Dunn (2) and Haak.

Lauren Haak led the team in hits with four on the day, including two triples and a double. She also led the team in RBIs with three.

On the defensive side, graduate student Kayla Gee earned her first win in a Cougars uniform in game one, throwing seven strikeouts. Sophomore third baseman Justine Boyle led the day with five assists, contributing to Lauren Haak's 14 putouts.

The Cougars are back in action on Saturday, March 6th at Waynesburg for another non-conference double header.
