Fertig Nets 22, Cougars Fall to Defending Champion Grove City

PITTSBURGH, Pa.February 17, 2021 – Despite junior Kaitlyn Fertig's season high 22 points, the Chatham women's basketball team fell behind to the visiting Grove City Wolverines and dropped its third game of the season 72-53.

After both teams traded baskets and Chatham assumed an early 6-4 lead, Grove City got in a groove to the tune of a 13-0 run. Defensively, the Cougars were held to just 2-16 shooting from the field in the first quarter, including one three-pointer, and were held to those six points scored in the first 4:21 of action.

In the second quarter, Chatham doubled its field goal makes with four but still shot 17 times from the field. Of the 17 first half points, Fertig had 10 of them, making her the only player in double digits at the halftime break.

Chatham came out firing out of the locker room, making 60% of its shots from the field including 4-8 from three. However, the Cougars never regained the lead despite the excellent shooting. In the fourth, Grove City would eventually put away the Cougars with an 8-0 run in the final 2:53.

The aforementioned Fertig led all players with 22 points, including a quartet of triples. Classmate Riley D'Angelo made 4-8 shots, all from three, and finished with an even dozen. Graduate Maddy Grennes gobbled up a team-high eight rebounds, while junior Aliyah Labriola dished out a trio of assists.
