PITTSBURGH, Pa. –
February 17, 2021 – Despite junior
Kaitlyn Fertig's season high 22 points, the Chatham women's basketball team fell behind to the visiting Grove City Wolverines and dropped its third game of the season 72-53.
After both teams traded baskets and Chatham assumed an early 6-4 lead, Grove City got in a groove to the tune of a 13-0 run. Defensively, the Cougars were held to just 2-16 shooting from the field in the first quarter, including one three-pointer, and were held to those six points scored in the first 4:21 of action.
In the second quarter, Chatham doubled its field goal makes with four but still shot 17 times from the field. Of the 17 first half points, Fertig had 10 of them, making her the only player in double digits at the halftime break.
Chatham came out firing out of the locker room, making 60% of its shots from the field including 4-8 from three. However, the Cougars never regained the lead despite the excellent shooting. In the fourth, Grove City would eventually put away the Cougars with an 8-0 run in the final 2:53.
Grove City led in every category, including a 53-42 edge in rebounds, forcing 23 Cougar turnovers compared to the 14 the Wolverines committed, a 14-8 advantage in assists, and had 21 steals. They turned in 25 points off of turnovers, while Chatham could muster eight.
The aforementioned Fertig led all players with 22 points, including a quartet of triples. Classmate
Riley D'Angelo made 4-8 shots, all from three, and finished with an even dozen. Graduate
Maddy Grennes gobbled up a team-high eight rebounds, while junior
Aliyah Labriola dished out a trio of assists.
Chatham will look to regroup on the road this Saturday with a nightcap at Geneva College. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
