ALTOONA, Pa. - December 20, 2021 - Chatham Women's Basketball traveled to Penn State Altoona this afternoon for a non conference matchup against the Lions. Despite trailing by five after the first quarter, the Cougars would notch three straight 22-point quarters to pull ahead, defeating the Lions by a final of 76-61.
The Cougars got their offense started with the first basket of the game thanks to a layup by graduate Brittani Smith. Junior Riley D'Angelo would follow with a three-pointer to minimize Altoona's lead. Classmate Sierra McClain would jump in soon after, contributing five straight points to end the quarter.
Chatham, trailing by five heading into the second quarter, would pull off some impressive offense to take the eventual lead. McClain, Smith, first-years Emily Durkee, Zelimar Rodriguez, and senior Aliyah Labriola would get on the board before graduate student Julianna Skowron got the equalizing layup at 26. Brittani Smith would hit two straight free throws to take the lead before first-year Aurielle Brunner scored her first points of the game with two layups.
Up by six at the half, the Cougars would maintain their offensive momentum. Skowron would quickly notch five points, followed by Durkee off of a rebound from McClain. Skowron, Brunner, Labriola, and D'Angelo would net their shots to give the Cougars a 12-point lead heading into the final quarter.
Altoona's comeback attempt was mitigated by continued offensive dominance on behalf of Chatham. Aliyah Labriola would score the Cougars' first points of the quarter, followed by Zelimar Rodriguez with a three to go up by 15. Rodriguez would continue scoring with insurance baskets from McClain, Smith, and Durkee, going up by as much as 19 points in the fourth.
Sierra McClain led the Cougar offensive charge with 16, followed by Emily Durkee and Julianna Skowron with 13 each. Zelimar Rodriguez would notch another 11.
Aliyah Labriola collected a game-high nine rebounds as Skowron notched seven.
With the win, the Cougars improve to 8-2 to round out the 2021 portion of the season.
