PITTSBURGH, Pa. - November 10, 2021 - Chatham Women's Basketball hosted Penn State Behrend tonight in a non-conference matchup. Despite being outscored in the first quarter, the Cougars rebounded to overcome the Lions 68-60.
The game was a defensive battle from the start, with neither team scoring until almost three full minutes in. Graduate Brittani Smith would be the one to break the stalemate, coming in hot with a jumper. Graduate Julianna Skowron, senior Aliyah Labriola, and first-year Emily Durkee would run the Cougars' score up to twelve before the end of the first quarter.
The Cougars would more than double their offensive presence in the second, coming up with 18 more points to take the lead over the Lions. Graduate Maddy Grennes would tally several points, as would Durkee and classmate Aurielle Brunner.
The third quarter saw new offense generated by junior Riley D'Angelo and first-year Zelimar Rodriguez, helping the Cougars to maintain their lead. Smith and Grennes came out in typical fashion, controlling the front of the net.
Chatham poured it on in the fourth, starting with a Maddy Grennes three-pointer following a steal from D'Angelo. Junior Sierra McClain would supply points in some crucial moments to solidify Chatham's lead.
Grennes led the Cougars with 14 points, followed by Durkee with 13 and Skowron with 10. Grennes also went 3-4 at the free throw line. Durkee led the Cougars with five assists, making smart plays all around.
Skowron collected a game-high 14 rebounds while D'Angelo and Brunner combined for six steals.
The Cougars now stand at 2-0 in advance of their first away matchup at Pitt Greensburg on Saturday, November 13.
