Devon Strachan: The Life of Hockey

APRIL 2, 2020 - Senior Hockey Goaltender Devon Strachan, originally from West Chester, Pa. now resides in Pittsburgh, Pa. She has one brother and one dog (a golden retriever named Chloe). Strachan's father played hockey and baseball growing up and both herself and her brother followed in his footsteps. The three of them have spent over half of her life in hockey rinks and baseball/softball diamonds year-round.

Strachan started skating lessons when she was four years old after watching her father play in his games. She has been able to watch the Johnstown Chiefs games (ECHL) and the Philadelphia Phantom games (AHL) with her father. Shortly after, she started playing travel hockey and didn't look back from there.

Originally, Strachan started her collegiate hockey career at William and Smith College in Geneva, New York. William and Smith College played a game at Chatham and Strachan was impressed with the academic and athletic offerings she was received. A few months later, she made the decision to transfer to Chatham to continue her hockey career but also play softball as well. Strachan wanted to make the most out of her three year-eligibility, so she decided to play both sports.

Strachan's favorite athlete is Marc-Andre Fleury. She's always been a Pittsburgh Penguin's fan so she grew up idolizing him and became #29 for this reason. "He's the most athletic goaltender I have ever seen, and he always makes the right decisions at the right time. He helped the Penguins win three Stanley Cups and is generally just a good person. Now, he plays for Vegas, so I'm a Golden Knights fan by default", Strachan says.

Strachan's greatest sport accomplishment happened during her PG year. At the time, she was playing juniors for the New Jersey Rockets and made it to the conference championship. Her team ended up winning the first two of the three game series, taking gold from the reigning champions. After defeating the reigning champs, Strachan's team went to the USA Hockey National Championship Tournament in Minneapolis, Minnesota where her team was matched against girls who played for Team USA.

One thing people don't know about Strachan is she used to be involved in the arts. She played violin and saxophone, sang in her schools' choir and acted in her schools' theatre productions. "Ultimately, I wanted to devote all of my time to sports, and I think people have generally seen me as all sports, all the time since then", Strachan says.

One quote Strachan stands by is "find a way or make one". "Hockey is a very emotional game filled with adversity, but this quote always reminded me to keep pushing no matter what was thrown at me. At the end of the day, yes, hockey is a game; but you have to remind yourself to work hard, make no excuses, and have fun in order to overcome the challenges", she says.
