PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Feb. 5, 2020 - The Cougars (13-7, 8-3) were back in the den to take on Grove City (12-7, 9-2) on Wednesday, February 5th in a battle for first place in the PAC. Chatham was riding a two game winning streak into the contest, recently taking down Washington and Jefferson 66-53 on Saturday, February 1st.
The first half started off slow for both teams, as they would only score 26 combined points at the 11:03 mark with Grove City on top 14-12. Chatham chipped away at Grove City's lead eventually taking the lead themselves 21-18 after junior Griffin Kirchner connected on a jump shot. With under two minutes to go in the half, Grove City tied the game at 32-32 after Justice Rice went 1-2 from the free throw line. They would head into the half with a three point difference with Grove City on top 35-32.
The Wolverines came storming out of the gates in the second half jumping out to a nine point lead after Rice's jumper made it 44-35. After a pair of free throws by Nate Peters, the Wolverines would make the score 53-38 giving them a 15 point advantage with 12:44 to play. Chatham would cut the lead to six after grad student Will Sandherr made a fast break layup to put the score at 69-63. It was the closest they would get, as the Cougars would ultimately fall to Grove City 74-65.
Sandherr was the leading scorer with 16 points while junior Malik Potter poured in 14 points of his own.
The Cougars are back on the road this Saturday, February 8th as they will travel to take on the Bison of Bethany College.
