After a Sluggish Start, Cougars Edge Out Thiel in Dramatic 68-67 Finish

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Feb. 12, 2020 - The Cougars (13-9, 8-5) were back in the den taking on Thiel College (6-13, 5-7) on Wednesday, February 12th in a PAC matchup. Chatham was coming off a road loss over the weekend to Bethany 74-69 for their 5th conference loss of the season.

Chatham came out to a slow start, going scoreless through the first five minutes of the game with Thiel holding an 11-0 lead over the Cougars. They continued to struggle, only scoring five points with eight minutes to play in the half, trailing Thiel 20-5. The Cougars started to chip away at the lead, cutting the difference to eight after junior Malik Potter's three made the score 28-20. With under a minute to play in the half first year Marcos Cintron drilled a three of his own and the Cougars trailed by five going into the half 28-23.

In the opening minutes of the second half, Thiel continued to control the lead after Nyric Gosley's jump shot made it 36-26. Chatham would answer by scoring five straight points to pull within five after Cintron scored back to back buckets on two straight possessions. The two opponents continued to battle with Chatham taking the lead for the first time 41-39 after sophomore Ray Sandherr connected on a three. The final five minutes featured both teams trading the lead down the stretch with Thiel regaining a one point lead 63-62. Chatham never gave up, as they stayed within three points of Thiel eventually regaining the lead 66-65 with under thirty seconds to play. They would eventually come out on top over the Tomcats 68-67 for their 14th win of the season and 9th conference win.

Cintron led the way with 21 points for Chatham while grad student Will Sandherr added 17 of his own to the victory. Ray Sandherr finished with 12 points and Potter was the fourth double digit scorer on the Cougars with 10.

The Cougars are back in action this Saturday, February 15th as they travel to take on Geneva College in a PAC matchup.
