NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Jan, 25, 2020 - Chatham (11-7, 6-2) was back on the court taking on the Titans (11-6, 5-3) in a conference matchup on Saturday, January 25th. The Cougars were riding a two game winning streak into the contest, recently taking down Saint Vincent 95-80 on Wednesday, January 22nd.
The opening minutes saw both teams going back and forth with each other, as Westminster found themselves out ahead 14-10 to start the half. The next 1:45 included a quick 8-2 run by the Titans, giving them a 22-12 lead. They continued to stifle the Cougars, shutting them down for zero points on a 12-0 run. The lead would enlarge to as many as 27 points, as Westminster would go into the second half in the driver seat leading 54-32.
In the opening minutes of the second, the Cougars started to carve away at the Titans lead narrowing the difference to 12, 64-52. The scoring margin dwindled to single digits after first year Elijah Sutton buried a three bringing the score to 64-57. They went back and forth over the next few minutes, with Westminster controlling the lead the entire time. The ensuing minutes proved to be a battle, as the Titans found themselves tied with Chatham 76-76 after grad student Will Sandherr made two free throws. With four minutes left on the clock, sophomore Ray Sandherr dialed in a three to keep the Cougars within one of the Titans 80-79. Chatham gave a last minute effort, but would ultimately fall short losing by 10, 90-80 for their third conference loss of the season.
Sutton led the way for the Cougars, tallying 20 points to go along with five rebounds on the afternoon. Will Sandherr was right behind Sutton, adding 16 of his own. This was Sutton's second straight 20 plus point performance, as he poured in a career high 25 against the Bearcats.
The Cougars are back in action Wednesday, January 29th in a third straight road matchup against the Yellow Jackets of Waynesburg.
